Nalan and Damayanthi the story

Nalan and Damayanti

Another love story from the Mahabharata, one of the epics of ancient India. That is the story of Nalan and Damayanti who come in the Vanaparva part of the epic. Princess Damayanti was the daughter of King Bhima of the Yadava clan of Vidarbha kingdom. Nalan was the young king of Nishada Kingdom.

Nalan hears about the beautiful and graceful princess Damayanti from Narada who is visiting the royal palace. Narada's description alone was enough to make Nalan fall in love with Damanthi.

Immersed in romantic thoughts, Nalan went for a walk in the garden of the royal palace. The thoughts in his mind were how to meet Damayanti and how to convey his love to her.

Nalan saw a beautiful flamingo (Arayanna) swimming in a lotus pond in the palace garden, caught it and  the frightened flamingo assured the king that if he let him go, he would help the king in any way he wanted. Nalan, who was good-natured and kind, released flamingo (Arayanna) and told the flamingo (Arayanna) about his love for Damayanti.

Aryannam went straight to Kundinapuram, the capital of King Bhima.
Aryannam met Damayanti in the garden near the royal palace and explained to her about the beauty, health and courage of King Nala and Nala's interest in Damayanti. Damayanthi also fell in love with Nalan after hearing the explanation of the flamingo, Arayanna. Arayannam assured her that he would be the messenger of their love, who had never seen each other till date. The next few days were spent waiting for the messages that the flamingo would bring. Although the messages arrived day after day, Damayanti was distracted from anything else.

She doesn't talk or laugh as much as she used to. But sometimes I laugh thinking about something. Suspecting that Damayanthi was ill, her companions informed King Bhima. The king consulted the queen and decided that Damayanti's Swayamvaram would be performed immediately.

(Swayamvaram is a ceremony in which the girl garlands the man of her choice from among the many suitors present in a pre-celebratory ceremony.)

Meanwhile, in Indraprastha, the world of gods, Indra, the king of the gods, learns from Narada about the beautiful Damayanti, her undying love for Nala, and the impending Swayamvaram (marriage). Why should he not accept such a beautiful Damayanti as his wife? Devendra thought. The gods Devendra Agni Yaman Varuna decided to participate in Swayamvaram.

He traveled to Kundinapuram along with Shani. On the way they met Nalan who was traveling to participate in Swayamvaram. Seeing Nala's beauty, the gods realized that they could not win over Nala. They chose another detour. They told Nala that he should go to Damayanti as their messenger and describe their qualities to her and get her to agree to marry one of them who are gods.
It is not royal justice to refuse the help asked of him. The gods assured Nala of many boons if he fulfilled their request for help. Nalan was ready to fulfil their demand not for the blessings,  but as a royal duty.

Due to the blessings of the gods, Nalan arrived at Damayanti's Antapuram (inner room), invisible to others, and presented the demands of the gods before her without revealing who he was. But none of Nala's words succeeded before Damayanti, who was completely opposed to a human-god union.

His threat that the gods might put obstacles in her married life was worthless in the face of her love for Nalan. Finally he informed Damayanti who he was and left the palace.

But the gods were not ready to give up. All four of them arrived at Swayamvarapantal in the form of Nalan. Now there are 5 people in the form of Nalan in the pandal. Damayanti is accompanied by Saraswati Devi, the goddess of knowledge, in the form of a consort of Damayanti, at the behest of Vishnu, one of the trinity of great deities. Saraswati Devi was describing to Damayanti the virtues of each king who came to Swayamvarapantal as a marriage candidate. At last they came before the five Nalas. Goddess Saraswati was explaining the qualities of each one. Damayanti prayed to the gods to reveal to her who among these five is the true Nala. When she looked, none of the gods' feet were touching the ground. None of the gods sweat or blink.

None of the flowers they worn have withered. Damayanti was embarrassed to find the right Nalan. She could not move out of shame. She turned and whispered into her friend Saraswati Devi's ear, "Na--". Actually she wanted to say Nala,

But only one letter 'Na' which means `NO' in Sanskrit came out. Hearing this, Saraswati Devi, disguised as a maidservant, took Damayanti to Nalan's side and told the gods about Damayanti's deep love for Nalan and asked them to bless the bride and groom. Although they were defeated, they allowed the marriage of Nala and Damayanti and showered blessings on Nala and Damayanti. On their way back to Indraprastha, the gods met the evil god Kali.

For Kali, who knows about Swayamvaram from the Devas and the failure of the Devas, he takes it also as the failure of himself as he is also a Deva. Deciding in his mind that he will end it only after making a suitable solution, Kali vows to make Nala and Damayanti's life miserable. Kali takes up residence in a tree near Nala's palace, waitin only for a good opportunity.

Life of Nala and Damayanti was happy in Nala's palace. Two children were born to them. Years passed. At some point the evil deity Kali managed to influence Nala. Instigated by Kali, Nalan gambled with his brother Pushkaran and lost his kingdom and wealth. Leaving their children under the care of Damayanti's father, Nalan and Damayanti went into exile.

Their life in the forest was very difficult. Once Nala saw a fire burning in the forest and left the sleeping Damayanti alone in the forest. Nala walked a little further through the forest and saved the Naga god Karkotaka from the fire who was sure to die in the forest fire. Instead Nagadev Karkotaka changed Nala's form and he became a monstrous Chandala. Nagadeva asks and advises Nala to go to Ayodhya and learn the secrets of gambling from its king Rituparnana.

Without even saying good-bye to Damayanti, he went to Ayodhya and, without seeing Nalan, poor Damayanti was wandering through the forest when a python came around and devoured her. Then a hunter who came by killed the snake and saved Damayanti from death. However, attracted by her beauty, he was ready to get her. Enraged, Damayanti cursed him and burnt him to ashes.

Damayanti wandered through the forest again and was picked up by a passing group of traders. But that night while they were resting in the forest, a herd of wild animals destroyed all the merchants' property. Believing that it was Damayanti's presence that caused this misfortune, the merchants chased her away from their company.

Running away from the traders with fear for her life, she reached the kingdom of Virapur. The queen Bhanumathi took her as her servant.
After some time a minister in the palace realized that the maid sevant was indeed Damayanti and brought her to her father in Vidarbha. Damayanti reached her father's palace and offered gifts to those who found her husband. A messenger announced that Bahuka, the charioteer of the king of the distant kingdom of Ayodhya, resembled Nalan.

Nalan Bahuka, who separated from Damayanti and came to Ayodhya, was living as Rituparna's servant and palace cook. During this time, Nala was able to learn all the secrets of gambling from King Rituparna. Damayanti decided to conduct an experiment to find out if Nalan was the one discovered by his servants. She sent some messengers to Ayodhya with the news that she was going to remarry. Nalan, who heard the message, got up and set off towards the Vidarbha kingdom with incredible speed.

Due to his speed, the kali that had entered Nala's body came out of his body and fell on the road. Arriving in Vidarbha, Nala Karkotaka regained his old form by donning a magical garment given to him by the serpent and asked to go to his own country to gamble with his younger brother Pushkaran once more. This time he gambled all his remaining possessions and his wife.

Pushkaran, who was sure that he would win, prepared for the competition in the interest of getting the beautiful Damayanti as his own. Pushkaran lost the game and Nalan regained his kingdom and honors. Nalan and Damayanti, united after suffering for four years, lived for a long time with all the opulence.

When Kali left Nala, he gave one more boon to Nala. It was said that Kali will not affect those who read and listen to this story of Nalan.

MY VISION FOR KERALA

Echo Discussion Forum, Switzerland

Presentation by Mathew Kuzhippallil on our discussion about “VISION FOR KERALA”, held on 13th December 2020

My Vision for KERALA: Vision 2020.

Thomas Edison, Joseph Swan and several others were involved in the discovery of the electric bulb. The Wright Brothers were pioneers in aviation. The Lumiere Brothers were the pioneers of film. Tractors, television sets and mobile phones were the inventions of individuals and private enterprises, not the work of governments.

Economic and social development is not an activity of the government. Nowhere in the world has a society developed solely because of government initiatives. It is the responsibility of governments to provide the framework for developing the creative and inventive potential of their people. Governments can also destroy creativity, innovation, and private enterprise. (Sadly, this was the case in Kerala for the last fifty years).

After Independence, India adopted a mixed economy. This really means that the government concerns itself with establishing major infrastructure projects and providing basic services (The Public Sector). It was left to the private sector to manufacture everything from safety pins to bicycles to buckets. Unfortunately, in Kerala, private enterprise was fought tooth and nail by certain political forces as they feared “capitalism”, which they never really understood. As a result, the ‘protectors’ of the working class have driven the working class out of the state of Kerala.

Kerala has a population of 330 Lakh people. Of this approximately 5.5 Lakhs are state and central government employees. Another 6.5 lakhs are employed in the poorly organized private sector. In other words, of the 330 Lakh population, Kerala has employment for only 12 Lakh people. 300Lakh people rely on small scale agriculture, and hard manual labour which can never generate the wealth needed to live a 21st century life.

This mass unemployment of the people of Kerala generates poverty. Unemployment cannot generate growth or development. It makes people dependent on the government. It makes people victims of alcohol and drugs. It encourages people to seek low paid employment anywhere in the world or commit suicide.

Some politicians and writers have always glorified manual labour. The ferry man, the hand rickshaw man, the coolie. But manual labour enslaves human beings and reduces them to muscles.

Should a society develop by protecting the boat man, or should it develop by building bridges? Should a coolie continue to carry heavy head loads or should we use forklift machines that can carry? Should the man pulling the rickshaw be encouraged to pull rickshaws all his life? Or should he or she be empowered to use an auto rickshaw? Why cannot he or she build a rickshaw run by electricity?

The fundamental question before the people of Kerala and all enlightened individuals is, should we use brains or just muscle?

Every human being has talents and an urge to create. Every human being can discover. Only by supporting the creativity and innovative power of the people can true development take place. One person in the socialist system who recognized this was the late Deng Xiaoping. ‘It doesn’t matter whether a cat is black or white, as long as it catches mice it’s a good cat’. With this statement, he was able to end socialism as an economic motor for the benefit of the Chinese people. Without him China would have gone down the drains of poverty.

So how can Kerala develop? It can only develop if we also take a leap forward. It can only grow if private industry is encouraged and protected. We can only grow, If the people can incorporate the gains of mechanization, technology, and digitalization into daily lives.

The educated youth of Kerala (and India) cannot continue to rely on manual labour and traditional, labour intensive agriculture. A man and a woman (just two people) using tractors, combined harvesters, computers, and drones can cultivate ten thousand acres of land. With the use of science and technology, they can produce ten times what a thousand manual labourers in Kerala can produce. Kerala does not need 288 Lakhs unproductive farmers (India does not need 8000 Lakhs farmers). Kerala only needs ten or twenty Lakhs productive farmers.

What will happen to all the rest? All the unemployed people? Very few of our politicians have seriously considered this question. Their answer is simple but also stupid: free food, free houses, free laptops or 6000 Rupees per person. Borrowed money. Empty treasury. And more promises. In other words, they have no idea and offer no hope.

India, it is said, develops at the pace of an elephant. If so, Kerala develops at a snail’s pace. Yes, we have four international airports. (But they do not have the industrial or manufacturing or innovation activity to support their status as major airports). We have some good schools. Better health care than most other states. But we also have the highest or second highest unemployment. The lowest skill development. And the highest suicide rate. India and Kerala develop very slowly and by chance. Perhaps even by fate.

My vision is a leap forward. And that leap is possible if we create smart cities and smart villages. Cities where young people experiment, develop, and produce. Villages where we encourage smart agriculture based on biodiversity. Where we encourage short term specialized crops (spices, cardamom, ginger etc.) and discourage monocultures like rubber, which destroy plant and animal life and do not allow flexibility of cultivation. We need villages where collective larger farms operate with the most modern technology available, where productivity is increased, in quantity but also in quality.

The planned cities of the future should be built around our four international airports and linked by the proposed Silverline. Each city must have a protected industrial and research area (like an IT park) and a separate well planned residential area. Each city must be able to house five million (50 Lakh) people. And each smart city should have technical and research institutions which develop computers, drones, medicines, food processing units etc. The Indian government has initiated the creation of one such smart city in DHOLERA. (Please see what a smart city in India could like on Youtube: Dholera).

Where will we take the money from? Kerala has about 30 Lakh expatriates who wish to see their state develop. They will invest if their enterprises are offered protection. Kerala has ornamental gold in every household. Above all, the people of Kerala have the desire to excel. The concept of smart cities should be studied and developed over the next 30 to 50 years. What is needed now is a vision, a plan of action and the will to implement it. Development without a vision will lead to chaos.

Many will blindly oppose it. Every development will be met with resistance from people who believe ‘yesterday was a lot better’. There will be narrow minded people, who prefer ‘nokku coolie’ to lifting and carrying machines. There will be people who prefer to help the poor and not empower them. There will be many, who use the comfort of airplanes, computers and cars but will deny the same to their fellow human beings. I am confident that intelligence will prevail over their muscle, their ignorance and their violence, and the lack of self-respect of those who support them.

In Kerala smart cities will become a necessity. Rising sea levels will flood and destroy cities like Alappuzha, Cochin, Calicut and Tellicherry. Climate change will compel us to evacuate from vast areas of the Western Ghats. The living space will be reduced drastically. It is therefore necessary that we create new green digital cities. It is imperative that the four International airports become major hubs of industrial activity.

We need to think ‘out of the box’. Our airports and railway stations can also combine malls, cultural and recreation centres. We need new inventions. Cycles that can travel over water. Clothes using new natural fibres. New sources of energy. New medicine derived from nature. Profitable agriculture that is digitally organized and managed. We need products that combine economy and ecology. Above all we must free human beings (and animals) from hard and exhausting manual labour.

I strongly oppose slavery to one party or to one government. A modern Kerala (a modern India) which relies on human ingenuity, digital technology, protection of nature and responsible freedom is my vision for the next 30 years.
